Discord File Size Limits
Understanding the maximum attachment upload size for your server, channel, or subscription level.
| Tier / Context | Maximum Size | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Any Server | 10 MB | Standard limit for all free users across all Discord servers without boosts. |
| Free / Server Boost Level 1 | 20 MB | Legacy free attachment limit and Level 1 boosted server upload size. |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB | Subscribers to Discord Nitro Basic ($2.99/mo). |
| Nitro | 500 MB | Subscribers to full Discord Nitro ($9.99/mo) and Server Boost Level 3. |
Why upload limits vary
Discord adjusts upload ceilings periodically depending on infrastructure requirements and server boost tiers. Channels in community servers with higher boost tiers inherit larger limits for all members, whereas standard unboosted servers and direct messages follow the baseline free account cap.
When you attempt to drag and drop a recording that exceeds the current threshold, Discord prompts you to subscribe to Nitro or blocks the attachment. Shrink enables you to select the appropriate target limit and re-encode the file instantly.
